The Gsiesertal Lauf has never been canceled due to weather conditions since 1984, but in 2021 it was canceled due to Covid-19. Even in winters without snow, the event took place thanks to efficient snow-making technology. In fact, in the past, the entire 42 km was often prepared with artificial snow. 

The Gsiesertal Lauf is one of the most popular and best-known ski marathons in the entire Alpine region. On Saturday, February 18, the race will take place in classic style, and on Sunday, February 19, 2023, in skating technique. 

Every year a total of 2,300 participants from over 40 nations participate in the race. From Scandinavia (NOR, SWE, FIN) alone, more than 200 people compete every year. The organizers are particularly proud of the relatively large proportion of senior athletes (over 50), with women accounting for around 30%.  

In February 2023, the Gsiesertal Lauf expects the 70,000th finisher in the history of the race. To be exact, only 358 participants are still missing.  

The famous post-race lunch and the traditional „after-race parties“ with lots of live music in the heated festival tent are particularly popular with participants from all over the world.

The reduced registration fee will run until 31.12.2022, and the organizers‘ homepage offers a wide range of accommodation options and suggestions on how to get to Italy. 

Seven Olympic champions appear on the honor list at the moment: Anders Aukland NOR, Ole Einar Björndalen NOR, Silvio Fauner ITA, Giorgio Di Centa ITA, Justyna Kowalczyk POL, Mikhail Botwinov RUS, Yevgeny Dementyev RUS. However, the great legend Björn Dahlie (eight-time Olympic champion) was denied victory when he took part.
